Bananas won’t spoil in just a few days; with this method,

Bananas naturally ripen quickly because they release ethylene gas, a plant hormone that speeds up ripening. While no method can keep bananas fresh forever, you can slow the process.

Ways to help bananas last longer

  1. Separate the bananas
    • A bunch ripens faster together because more ethylene builds up around the fruit.
  2. Wrap the stems
    • Cover the banana stems with plastic wrap or reusable wrap. This can slow the release of ethylene gas.
  3. Keep them at room temperature
    • Store bananas away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
  4. Keep them away from other ripening fruits
    • Apples, pears, avocados, and other fruits can also release ethylene and speed ripening.
  5. Refrigerate ripe bananas
    • The peel may turn brown or black, but the inside can stay good longer.
  6. Freeze overripe bananas
    • Peel them first, place them in a freezer bag, and use them later for smoothies, baking, or desserts.

A useful trick is to buy bananas at different ripeness stages so you always have some ready to eat while others are still ripening.
