Does anyone know what kind of insect this is? I just found it on my son’s head…

It sounds like you’re dealing with something that could be urgent, but I can’t identify the insect without seeing it.

If you can, upload a clear photo (close-up, good lighting). That will make identification much more accurate.

In the meantime, here’s how to quickly assess what it might be:

🪳 Most common insect found in hair (especially kids)

🟤 Head lice (most likely)

Pediculosis capitis

  • Very small (2–3 mm), tan or gray
  • Moves quickly but does NOT fly or jump
  • Eggs (nits) look like tiny white/yellow dots stuck firmly to hair strands
  • Causes itching on scalp, especially behind ears and neck

🦟 Other possibilities

  • Flea: darker, jumps quickly, usually from pets
  • Bed bug: unlikely to be on head, more on bedding/skin
  • Mosquito/gnat: usually flies away, not found stuck in hair

🚨 What you should do right now

  • Check scalp under bright light (especially behind ears + nape of neck)
  • Use a fine-tooth comb on damp hair over white tissue/paper
  • Wash bedding, pillowcases, and hats in hot water
  • Avoid panic—head lice are common and treatable

💊 If it is head lice

  • Over-the-counter lice shampoo or lotion usually works
  • Combing every 2–3 days is important
  • Treat close contacts if needed

🧠 Bottom line

Most insects found on a child’s head are head lice, not dangerous bugs, and they’re common in school-age children.

If you upload the image, I can tell you much more precisely what it is and what to do next.
