Magnesium is an important mineral, but magnesium supplements can interact with certain medications. Don’t stop or start any medication or supplement without discussing it with your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
1. Antibiotics
Magnesium can reduce the absorption of some antibiotics, including:
- Doxycycline
- Ciprofloxacin
- Levofloxacin
These medications often need to be taken several hours apart from magnesium.
2. Thyroid medication
Magnesium can interfere with the absorption of levothyroxine, making it less effective.
3. Osteoporosis medications
Magnesium can reduce the absorption of bisphosphonates (such as alendronate), so they should not be taken at the same time.
4. Diabetes medications
Magnesium may affect blood sugar levels in some people. If you take insulin or other diabetes medicines, ask your healthcare provider before starting a supplement.
5. Diuretics (“water pills”)
Some diuretics lower magnesium levels, while others can increase them. Your healthcare provider may recommend monitoring magnesium if needed.
6. Certain heart medications
People taking medications for heart rhythm problems or blood pressure should ask their healthcare provider before using magnesium supplements, as interactions or changes in magnesium levels may affect treatment.
Who should be especially cautious?
- People with kidney disease, because excess magnesium may build up in the body.
- Anyone taking multiple prescription medications.
