Eight pills you shouldn’t take because they damage your kidneys

8 Medicines You Should Be Careful With If You’re Protecting Your Kidneys

Some medicines can affect kidney function, especially when taken in high doses, for a long time, or by people who already have kidney problems. Always follow your healthcare professional’s advice.

  1. Certain pain relievers (NSAIDs)
Examples include ibuprofen and naproxen. Frequent or high-dose use may strain the kidneys in some people.
  2. Some antibiotics
Certain antibiotics can affect kidney function and may require dose adjustments.
  3. Some heart and blood pressure medicines
Certain medications may need monitoring through blood tests, especially if kidney function is reduced.
  4. Some diuretics (“water pills”)
They can affect fluid balance and kidney function if not properly managed.
  5. Some acid-reducing medicines
Long-term use of certain acid reflux medicines may be linked with kidney concerns in some studies.
  6. Some antiviral medicines
Certain antiviral drugs may require kidney monitoring.
  7. Some supplements and herbal products
“Natural” does not always mean kidney-safe; some products can harm kidneys or interact with medicines.
  8. High-dose vitamins or minerals
Excess amounts of certain supplements may be harmful, especially with kidney disease.

Protect your kidneys:
• Avoid taking medicines more often or at higher doses than recommended
• Tell your doctor about all medicines and supplements you use
• Ask before starting new over-the-counter products

If you have kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, or are older, regular medication reviews are especially important.

Note: Many medicines are safe when used correctly. The risk often depends on the dose, duration, other health conditions, and hydration status—not simply the name of the medicine.
