The headline is somewhat misleading. Good hygiene is important at every age, but there are no five body areas that people over 60 specifically need to wash to stay “energized.” That said, some areas are commonly overlooked and deserve regular attention, especially as skin changes with age.

Five areas that are often missed include:

  1. Behind the ears – Sweat, skin oils, and dead skin can accumulate here.
  2. Between the toes – Washing and drying thoroughly helps reduce the risk of fungal infections.
  3. The belly button – Lint, sweat, and bacteria can collect, particularly if the navel is deep.
  4. Under the nails – Cleaning beneath fingernails and toenails helps remove dirt and germs.
  5. Skin folds (such as under the breasts, in the groin, or abdominal folds) – Keeping these areas clean and dry can help prevent irritation and fungal infections.

For older adults, it’s also worth remembering:

  • Use warm rather than very hot water.
  • Choose a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser if your skin is dry or sensitive.
  • Apply moisturizer after bathing to help protect the skin barrier.
  • Dry carefully between toes and in skin folds.

Daily bathing isn’t necessary for everyone. Many healthy older adults can bathe every 2–3 days while washing the face, hands, underarms, groin, and feet more frequently as needed. The best routine depends on your activity level, skin condition, and personal preference.
