If your pillows have become yellowed or have developed odors, you can often freshen them with proper washing. The best method depends on whether they’re filled with down, feathers, polyester, memory foam, or latex—always check the care label first.
For machine-washable pillows (often polyester or some down/feather pillows)
- Remove pillowcases and protectors.
- Pretreat stained areas with a small amount of liquid laundry detergent or a stain remover.
- Wash two pillows together (to help balance the machine) on a gentle cycle with warm water, if the care label allows.
- Use a small amount of detergent, as too much can be difficult to rinse out.
- Run an extra rinse cycle to remove any detergent residue.
Drying
- Tumble dry on low heat if the care label permits.
- Add a couple of clean dryer balls or tennis balls (inside clean socks) to help keep the filling fluffy.
- Make sure the pillows are completely dry before using them to prevent mildew and odors.
For memory foam or latex pillows
These usually should not be machine washed. Instead:
- Spot-clean stains with mild soap and water.
- Blot rather than soak.
- Allow the pillow to air-dry thoroughly.
To help keep pillows fresh
- Use a washable pillow protector.
- Wash pillowcases regularly.
- Air pillows outdoors occasionally in dry weather (avoiding prolonged direct sunlight if recommended by the manufacturer).
About whitening: Some online “recipes” suggest using bleach or strong homemade mixtures. These can damage certain fabrics and fillings or leave residues. Following the manufacturer’s care instructions is the safest way to clean pillows while preserving their condition.
