Here’s how to clean dirty bed pillows to leave them white and smelling sweet.

Cleaning bed pillows depends on what they’re made of, but many pillows can be washed safely.

For most polyester or down-alternative pillows:

  1. Check the care label first.
  2. Wash two pillows together (to balance the washing machine) using warm water and a small amount of mild detergent.
  3. If the pillows have yellowing or odors, you can add ½ cup of white vinegar during the rinse cycle to help remove residue and smells.
  4. Rinse thoroughly.
  5. Dry on low heat with a couple of clean tennis balls or wool dryer balls to help keep the filling fluffy. Make sure the pillows are completely dry to prevent mold.

For memory foam or latex pillows:

  • Do not machine wash them. Instead, spot-clean with a mild detergent solution and allow them to air-dry completely.

To keep pillows fresh between washes:

  • Use pillow protectors.
  • Wash pillowcases weekly.
  • Air pillows outside occasionally in dry weather.
  • Replace pillows when they lose support or can’t be cleaned effectively (often every 1–2 years, depending on the type and condition).

The claim that pillows will become “white and smell sweet” is a bit exaggerated, but proper washing can remove many stains, odors, and buildup, leaving them noticeably cleaner and fresher.
