To clean dirty bed pillows and get them looking whiter and smelling fresh again:
- Check the care label first. Most polyester, cotton, and down pillows are machine washable, but memory foam pillows usually are not.
- Wash two pillows at a time to balance the machine. Use warm water, a gentle cycle, and a small amount of liquid detergent.
- Add whitening boosters:
- ½ cup baking soda for odor removal
- 1 cup white vinegar during the rinse cycle
- Optional: oxygen bleach for deep stains
- Run an extra rinse cycle to remove all soap residue, which can leave pillows yellow.
- Dry thoroughly on low heat with clean tennis balls or dryer balls to keep pillows fluffy and prevent clumping.
- For extra freshness, let the pillows air out in sunlight for a few hours. Sunlight naturally helps whiten fabric and remove odors.
- To keep pillows cleaner longer:
- Use washable pillow protectors
- Wash pillows every 3–6 months
- Replace heavily stained or flattened pillows every 1–2 years
Avoid using too much detergent, since buildup can trap dirt and smells instead of removing them.
