Hip Pain Could Be More Than Just Aging — Don’t Ignore These Warning Signs

Hip pain is common as people get older, but it is not always just a normal part of aging. Sometimes hip pain can signal an injury, inflammation, joint disease, or another condition that needs attention.

Possible causes of hip pain

1. Osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear arthritis)

  • A common cause of hip pain, especially with age.
  • Symptoms may include stiffness, reduced range of motion, and pain that worsens with activity.

2. Bursitis or tendon problems

  • Inflammation around the hip can cause pain on the outer side of the hip, especially when lying on that side or climbing stairs.

3. Muscle strains or injuries

  • Can occur from exercise, falls, or overuse.
  • Pain may improve with rest but return with certain movements.

4. Nerve-related pain

  • Problems in the lower back can cause pain that travels into the hip, buttock, or leg.

5. Fractures or bone problems

  • In older adults, especially those with osteoporosis, even a minor fall can sometimes cause a hip fracture.

Warning signs that should not be ignored

Seek medical advice if you have:

  • Sudden, severe hip pain or inability to put weight on the leg
  • Hip pain after a fall or injury
  • Pain that is getting worse or does not improve
  • Fever, redness, or swelling around the hip
  • Unexplained weight loss or persistent night pain
  • Weakness, numbness, or pain traveling down the leg

Ways to support hip health

  • Maintain regular low-impact activity (walking, swimming, cycling)
  • Strengthen the muscles around the hips and legs
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Avoid prolonged inactivity
  • Address falls and balance issues early

Hip pain is worth evaluating when it changes your mobility, sleep, or daily activities. If you share your age, where the hip pain is (front, side, buttock, or groin), how long it has lasted, and what makes it worse, I can help narrow down possible causes.
