To make dirty bed pillows look whiter and smell fresh again, the best method depends on the pillow filling (down/feather, polyester, or memory foam). Here is a safe general cleaning method for washable pillows:

1. Check the care label

  • If the label says machine washable, you can deep-clean them.
  • Memory foam or latex pillows usually should not go in the washing machine; they need spot cleaning.

2. Wash the pillows

  1. Remove pillowcases and protectors.
  2. Put two pillows in the washing machine at once to keep the load balanced.
  3. Use warm water and a gentle cycle.
  4. Add:
    • Your normal laundry detergent
    • ½ cup baking soda (helps remove odors and yellowing)
    • ½ cup white vinegar in the fabric softener compartment (helps freshen and soften)

For very yellow pillows:

  • Add a small amount of oxygen bleach (color-safe bleach), following the product instructions.
  • Avoid chlorine bleach unless the manufacturer specifically allows it, as it can weaken some pillow materials.

3. Rinse thoroughly

Run an extra rinse cycle if possible. Leftover detergent can make pillows feel stiff and hold odors.

4. Dry completely

  • Put pillows in the dryer on low heat (if allowed).
  • Add dryer balls or clean tennis balls to help fluff them.
  • Make sure the inside is completely dry—damp filling can develop a musty smell.

5. Make them smell sweet and fresh

After drying:

  • Sprinkle a little baking soda over the pillow surface.
  • Leave for 30–60 minutes.
  • Vacuum it off.
  • Add a few drops of lavender or another mild essential oil to a cloth and place it near the pillow (avoid applying oil directly if you have sensitive skin).

To keep pillows white longer

  • Use pillow protectors under pillowcases.
  • Wash pillowcases weekly.
  • Wash pillows about every 3–6 months (depending on use and care instructions).

If your pillows are yellow from sweat/oil stains, I can also give you a stronger “hotel-style whitening” method.
