Milia are tiny, firm, white or yellowish bumps that often appear around the eyes, cheeks, nose, or forehead. Despite being called “fat cysts” online, they are not caused by trapped fat—they are small keratin-filled cysts (keratin is a protein found in skin, hair, and nails).
Ways to deal with milia:
- Don’t squeeze or pop them: Unlike pimples, milia do not have an opening, and squeezing can cause irritation, scarring, or infection.
- Use gentle exfoliation: Products containing ingredients such as retinoids or mild chemical exfoliants (like salicylic acid or glycolic acid) may help prevent new buildup for some people.
- Use non-heavy skincare products: Thick creams or occlusive products around the eyes may contribute to some people developing milia.
- Protect your skin from sun damage: Sunscreen helps maintain healthy skin and may reduce factors that contribute to skin changes.
