How to Use Baking Soda to Remove Dark Spots, Wrinkles, and Dark Circles from Your Face

Baking soda is often promoted online as a “natural” remedy for dark spots, wrinkles, and dark circles, but there is limited scientific evidence that it can safely or effectively remove these concerns. In fact, using baking soda directly on the face may cause problems because it is alkaline, while healthy skin is naturally slightly acidic. It can disrupt the skin barrier and lead to dryness, irritation, redness, or increased sensitivity.

Safer ways to address these concerns

For dark spots (hyperpigmentation):

  • Use daily sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to prevent spots from getting darker.
  • Ingredients with evidence for improving uneven tone include:
    • Vitamin C
    • Niacinamide
    • Azelaic acid
    • Retinoids (such as retinol, when suitable)

For wrinkles and fine lines:

  • Apply sunscreen every day.
  • Use a moisturizer to support the skin barrier.
  • Retinoids are among the better-studied topical ingredients for improving fine lines.
  • Avoid smoking and prioritize adequate sleep and nutrition.

For dark circles:

  • Improve sleep consistency and manage allergies if they contribute.
  • Use gentle moisturizers around the eyes.
  • Some dark circles are caused by genetics, thin skin, or facial structure and may not fully disappear with topical remedies.

If you still want to use baking soda

It is generally better to avoid applying baking soda as a facial scrub or mask. If you have already used it and notice burning, itching, or peeling, stop using it and apply a gentle moisturizer.

A simple skin-care routine that is usually safer:

  1. Gentle cleanser
  2. Moisturizer
  3. Broad-spectrum sunscreen in the morning
  4. Targeted treatment (such as niacinamide or a retinoid) at night if appropriate

If you share your skin type (oily, dry, sensitive), age range, and whether the dark spots are from acne, sun exposure, or something else, I can suggest a more suitable routine.
