If You Have Hip Pain, It Could Be a Sign That…

Hip pain is a common problem, especially as people get older, but it does not point to one single cause. The meaning of hip pain depends on where it hurts, how it started, and what other symptoms are present.

Common reasons for hip pain

1. Osteoarthritis (wear and tear of the joint)

A frequent cause of hip pain, especially in older adults.

Possible signs:

  • Pain that worsens with walking or standing
  • Stiffness after sitting or resting
  • Reduced range of motion
  • A grinding or clicking feeling

2. Muscle or tendon strain

Overuse, lifting, exercise, or a sudden movement can irritate muscles around the hip.

Possible signs:

  • Pain with certain movements
  • Tenderness around the hip or outer thigh
  • Improvement with rest

3. Bursitis

Inflammation of the small fluid-filled sacs that cushion the hip joint.

Possible signs:

  • Pain on the outside of the hip
  • Discomfort when lying on that side
  • Pain when climbing stairs or getting up from a chair

4. Nerve-related problems

Pain may come from nerves in the lower back rather than the hip itself.

Possible signs:

  • Tingling or numbness
  • Burning pain
  • Pain traveling down the leg

5. Injury or fracture

A fall or accident can cause serious hip problems, especially in older adults.

Seek urgent medical attention if:

  • You cannot put weight on the leg
  • The hip looks deformed
  • Severe pain occurs after a fall
