Note that if you always sleep on your right side, you should have… See more

What sleeping on your right side can actually affect

1. Acid reflux (heartburn)

Sleeping position can influence stomach acid movement.

  • Right-side sleeping may worsen acid reflux in some people
  • Left-side sleeping may reduce reflux symptoms

This is because of how the stomach sits in the body and how gravity affects acid flow.

2. Heart and circulation myths

A common online claim is that right-side sleeping “harms the heart.”
This is not supported by strong scientific evidence in healthy people.

Your heart functions normally in all sleeping positions.

3. Pregnancy considerations (important exception)

In later pregnancy, doctors often recommend side sleeping (usually left side preferred) to:

  • Improve blood flow to the fetus
  • Reduce pressure on major blood vessels

But even then, alternating sides is normal.

4. Sleep quality and comfort

Side preference often depends on:

  • Shoulder or hip pain
  • Mattress support
  • Breathing patterns (like snoring or mild sleep apnea)

5. Sleep disorders (indirect link)

Sleep position can affect symptoms of conditions like:
Obstructive Sleep Apnea

  • Some people snore more on their back or certain sides
  • But side preference alone does not diagnose any condition

When sleep position might matter

You should pay attention if sleeping position is linked with:

  • Frequent heartburn at night
  • Shortness of breath during sleep
  • Snoring or choking episodes
  • Persistent shoulder or back pain

These symptoms—not the position itself—are what matter medically.
