Put a roll of toilet paper in the fridge. Here’s why.

This is one of those viral “life hacks” that sounds intriguing but doesn’t really have a solid reason behind it.

Putting a roll of toilet paper in the fridge is sometimes claimed online to “absorb odors” or “keep the fridge fresh.” In reality, it doesn’t do anything useful:

  • Toilet paper isn’t designed as an odor absorber, so it won’t meaningfully neutralize smells in a fridge.
  • It can actually pick up moisture from the cold, humid environment, which makes it less hygienic.
  • If anything, it just becomes a soft sponge sitting next to your food.

If the goal is odor control, better options are:

  • Baking soda in an open container (classic and actually effective)
  • Activated charcoal (very effective at trapping odors)
  • Regular cleaning and removing spoiled food (the real fix)

So the “roll of toilet paper in the fridge” idea is basically internet folklore—not a practical household trick.
