WARNING! THESE TABLETS CAN CAUSE BLOOD CLOTS, BLOOD THROMBOTS, AND HEART ATTACKS

That warning is serious, but it’s also incomplete on its own.

Blood clots, thrombosis, and heart attacks are not caused by most tablets in general. They are known risks for a small group of specific medications, depending on the drug, dose, and the person taking it.

Common examples of medicines that may (rarely) increase clot risk include:

  • Combined oral contraceptive pills (estrogen-containing birth control)
  • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
  • Some cancer treatments
  • Certain anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may slightly raise cardiovascular risk in high-risk people

But even in these cases:

  • The risk is usually low for healthy people
  • Doctors prescribe them only when benefits outweigh risks
  • Risk depends heavily on factors like smoking, obesity, age, genetics, and previous clot history

Important clarification

A warning like “CAUSE BLOOD CLOTS, THROMBOSIS, HEART ATTACKS” is often:

  • A regulatory safety warning (black box or leaflet warning)
  • Or a marketing scare message without context

What matters most

If you saw this on a medicine package or ad:

  • Tell me the name of the tablets
  • I can explain the real risk level for that specific drug
  • And whether it’s actually something to worry about in your case

If you have symptoms like chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, leg swelling, or severe headache while taking any medication, that needs urgent medical attention.
