A peace lily (Spathiphyllum) may stop blooming when it lacks the right balance of light, water, nutrients, or care. Here are 11 ways to encourage more flowers:
1. Give it bright, indirect light
Peace lilies prefer bright filtered light. Too little light often means lots of leaves but few flowers. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch leaves.
2. Don’t overwater
Keep the soil lightly moist, but don’t let the plant sit in soggy soil. Yellowing leaves are often a sign of too much water.
3. Water when the top soil dries
Check the top 2–3 cm (about 1 inch) of soil. Water when it feels dry rather than following a strict schedule.
4. Use good drainage
Make sure the pot has drainage holes. Poor drainage can damage roots and reduce blooming.
5. Feed with the right fertilizer
A balanced houseplant fertilizer or a bloom-supporting fertilizer used during the growing season can help. Avoid overfertilizing, which can cause leaf growth at the expense of flowers.
6. Keep it warm
Peace lilies generally prefer temperatures around 18–29°C (65–85°F) and dislike cold drafts.
7. Increase humidity
They naturally enjoy humid conditions. Try a humidifier, a pebble tray with water, or grouping plants together.
8. Repot when root-bound
A slightly snug pot is fine, but a severely crowded root system can limit growth. Repot into a container only slightly larger when needed.
9. Clean the leaves
Dust blocks light absorption. Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth to help the plant photosynthesize efficiently.
10. Remove old flowers and damaged leaves
Cut spent blooms and yellow leaves near the base. This allows the plant to focus energy on new growth.
11. Be patient
Peace lilies often bloom in cycles. A healthy plant may need weeks or months of improved conditions before producing new flowers.
