5 Diabetes Symptoms That May Appear at Night
Some diabetes-related symptoms can become more noticeable during the night because blood sugar changes continue while you sleep. Common nighttime signs include:
- Frequent nighttime urination
- High blood sugar can cause the kidneys to remove extra glucose, leading to increased urine production and repeated bathroom trips.
- Excessive thirst
- Fluid loss from frequent urination can cause a dry mouth and strong thirst, especially at night.
- Night sweats
- Episodes of sweating during sleep may occur when blood sugar drops too low (especially in people using insulin or certain diabetes medicines).
- Tingling, burning, or numb feet
- Nerve damage related to diabetes (diabetic neuropathy) can cause discomfort that is often more noticeable when resting in bed.
- Poor sleep or waking up tired
- Blood sugar fluctuations, thirst, urination, and discomfort can disturb sleep and leave a person feeling fatigued the next day.
These symptoms can have many causes besides diabetes. If you notice several of them—particularly increased thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, unusual fatigue, or slow-healing wounds—consider getting a blood sugar check such as a fasting glucose test or HbA1c test.
