Bleach stains on your clothes? Don’t throw them away just yet.
Bleach stains are actually areas where the fabric’s color has been removed, so they can’t be “washed out.” However, you can often restore or disguise the damage with a few simple techniques.
Solution 1: Use a Fabric Marker
For small bleach spots:
- Choose a fabric marker that closely matches the garment’s color.
- Test it on an inconspicuous area first.
- Carefully color in the bleached area.
- Let it dry and repeat if needed for better coverage.
Solution 2: Re-Dye the Garment
For larger stains:
- Select a fabric dye suitable for the fabric type.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Dye the entire garment to achieve a more even color.
This works particularly well on solid-colored cotton clothing.
Solution 3: Get Creative
If color matching is difficult:
- Add embroidery over the spot.
- Sew on a patch.
- Use fabric paint to create a design.
- Turn the garment into a tie-dye project.
Before You Start
If the bleach spill is recent, rinse the area thoroughly with cool water to stop further bleaching. Once the dye has been removed, though, cleaning products won’t restore the original color—the fix involves adding color back or covering the affected area.
With a little effort, many bleach-damaged clothes can be given a second life instead of ending up in the trash.
