The Real Causes of Constant Phlegm and Mucus in Throat and How to Get Rid of It

Constant phlegm or the feeling of mucus stuck in your throat can have several causes. The most effective treatment depends on the underlying reason.

Common causes include:

  • Postnasal drip: Mucus from the nose or sinuses drains into the throat. This is often due to allergies, a cold, or sinus irritation.
  • Acid reflux (GERD or silent reflux): Stomach acid can irritate the throat, leading to frequent throat clearing and a sensation of mucus.
  • Allergies: Exposure to pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mold can increase mucus production.
  • Respiratory infections: Viral infections, bacterial infections, or lingering inflammation after a cold can cause excess mucus.
  • Smoking or air pollution: These irritate the airways and stimulate mucus production.
  • Asthma or chronic lung conditions: Some people produce more mucus as part of these conditions.
  • Dehydration: Not drinking enough fluids can make mucus thicker and harder to clear.

To help reduce throat mucus:

  • Stay well hydrated to keep mucus thin.
  • Gargle with warm salt water several times a day.
  • Use a saline nasal spray or nasal rinse if postnasal drip is the problem.
  • Avoid smoking and reduce exposure to irritants.
  • If allergies are triggering symptoms, minimizing exposure to allergens and using appropriate allergy treatment may help.
  • If reflux is suspected, avoid large meals before bedtime, limit spicy or fatty foods if they trigger symptoms, and elevate the head of your bed.

You should seek medical evaluation if:

  • Symptoms last more than 3–4 weeks without improvement.
  • You cough up blood.
  • You have persistent fever, unexplained weight loss, chest pain, or difficulty breathing.
  • The mucus is persistently foul-smelling or associated with severe facial pain or swelling.

If you describe the color of the mucus (clear, white, yellow, green, or bloody), how long you’ve had it, whether you have a cough, heartburn, or allergies, and your age, I can help narrow down the most likely cause.
