New method: colonoscopy will no longer be an invasive examination. (1/2)

That headline is partly misleading.A traditional Colonoscopy is still the standard test for examining the inside of the colon and removing polyps. It remains an invasive procedure because a flexible camera is inserted through the rectum.

However, researchers and healthcare systems are developing and using less invasive alternatives in some situations, including:

  • CT colonography (“virtual colonoscopy”), which uses CT imaging instead of a scope. If it finds suspicious polyps, a standard colonoscopy is still needed to remove them.
  • Colon capsule endoscopy, in which a person swallows a small camera capsule. This is not suitable for everyone, and abnormal findings usually require a conventional colonoscopy for confirmation or treatment.
  • Fecal immunochemical test (FIT), a stool test used for screening. A positive result is followed by a colonoscopy.

So, there is no new method that has made colonoscopy itself non-invasive. Less invasive screening options exist and continue to improve, but they generally complement rather than replace standard colonoscopy, especially when biopsies or polyp removal are needed.

If the headline is referring to a specific “new method,” I can help explain it if you share the article or link.
