That actually can work really well—the “bag method” is a common trick for loosening baked-on grease.
If you’re basically sealing the oven rack in a plastic bag with a cleaning solution (often ammonia or a strong degreaser), the closed environment helps the grime soften and slide off, so it comes out looking almost new.
A couple of important safety points though:
- If you’re using ammonia or strong cleaners, make sure the bag is tightly sealed and kept in a well-ventilated area (ideally outdoors or in a balcony).
- Don’t mix ammonia with bleach or any bleach-containing cleaner—those fumes are dangerous.
- Let it soak long enough (often overnight) so you don’t need heavy scrubbing later.
After soaking, most of the grease usually wipes off easily with a sponge or cloth.
If you want, tell me exactly what you’re putting inside the bag—I can suggest a safer or even more effective variation depending on your method.
