# My neighbor taught me this trick to clean green algae off siding with 0 effort. Here’s how it works

Green algae on house siding is common, especially on shaded or damp sides of a home. There isn’t a true “0 effort” method, but there are effective ways to remove it with minimal scrubbing.

A common approach is:

  1. Mix a cleaning solution:
    • 1 part household bleach to 3 parts water, or
    • Use an oxygen bleach or a commercial siding cleaner if you prefer a less harsh option.
  2. Wet nearby plants with plain water to help protect them.
  3. Apply the solution with a pump sprayer or soft brush.
  4. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes without allowing it to dry completely.
  5. Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose. Light algae often comes off with little or no scrubbing.

Safety tips

  • Wear gloves and eye protection.
  • Never mix bleach with ammonia, vinegar, or other cleaners, as this can produce dangerous gases.
  • Protect landscaping by rinsing plants before and after using bleach.
  • Avoid using high-pressure washing on vinyl siding unless you know the correct technique, as it can force water behind the siding and potentially cause damage.

If you’d rather avoid bleach, oxygen bleach products or cleaners specifically formulated for exterior siding can also be effective and are generally gentler on surrounding vegetation.

The best long-term prevention is to trim back overhanging trees to increase sunlight and airflow, and clean the siding periodically before algae becomes heavily established.
