5 Exercises That Could Harm You in Old Age

The idea that certain exercises are automatically “bad” in old age is misleading. Exercise is one of the most important ways to maintain strength, balance, and independence as we age, but some movements may need to be modified based on a person’s health, fitness level, and injuries.

Here are five types of exercise that may need extra caution for some older adults:

1. High-impact jumping exercises

Examples: box jumps, repeated jumping, intense plyometrics

  • May be harder on joints, especially for people with arthritis, osteoporosis, or balance problems.
  • Lower-impact alternatives: walking, cycling, swimming, or controlled strength exercises.

2. Heavy lifting with poor technique

  • Strength training is beneficial, but lifting weights that are too heavy or using poor form can increase injury risk.

  • Ignoring chest pain, dizziness, unusual shortness of breath, or sharp joint pain can be dangerous.
