High blood pressure, high cholesterol: Avoid these 3 habits in the morning

If you have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, your morning routine can be a good opportunity to support heart health. While no single habit causes or cures these conditions, some morning behaviors may work against your goals.

3 morning habits to avoid

1. ☕ Drinking too much caffeine immediately after waking

Caffeine can temporarily raise blood pressure in some people, especially those who are sensitive to it. If your blood pressure is difficult to control, consider monitoring how your body responds.

Better option: Drink water first, then have coffee or tea in moderation if your healthcare professional says it’s appropriate.

2. 🥓 Starting the day with a high-salt, processed breakfast

Foods like processed meats, salty packaged foods, and some fast breakfasts can add a lot of sodium and saturated fat.

Better option: Choose foods such as:

  • Oats with fruit and nuts
  • Eggs with vegetables
  • Whole-grain toast with healthy fats
  • Low-sodium options

3. 🛋️ Being inactive all morning

Long periods of sitting can contribute to poorer cardiovascular health.

Better option: Add gentle movement:

  • A short walk
  • Stretching
  • Light exercise (as appropriate for your health)

Also helpful:

  • Take prescribed blood pressure or cholesterol medicines exactly as directed.
  • Check blood pressure regularly if your clinician recommends it.
  • Aim for a heart-healthy diet with plenty of vegetables, fiber, and lean proteins.

If you have a recent blood pressure reading and cholesterol numbers (LDL, HDL, triglycerides), I can help you understand what they mean.
