6 Vitamins to Unclog Your Arteries

There are no vitamins proven to “unclog” blocked arteries or remove established plaque buildup. Artery plaque (atherosclerosis) usually cannot be dissolved by vitamins. However, certain vitamins and nutrients can support cardiovascular health by helping with processes related to blood vessels, inflammation, and risk factors.

Six nutrients often discussed in heart health are:

  1. Vitamin D
    • Helps regulate inflammation and calcium metabolism.
    • Low vitamin D levels are associated with higher cardiovascular risk, but taking supplements does not reliably remove artery plaque.
  2. Vitamin K (especially K2)
    • Plays a role in calcium regulation in the body.
    • Some research suggests a possible role in vascular health, but it has not been proven to reverse arterial blockages.
  3. Vitamin C
    • An antioxidant that supports blood vessel function and collagen formation.
    • Obtaining enough from fruits and vegetables is generally beneficial for heart health.
  4. Vitamin E
    • Acts as an antioxidant.
    • High-dose supplements have not consistently shown heart benefits and may be harmful for some people.
  5. B Vitamins (especially B6, B12, and folate)
    • Help control homocysteine levels, a marker associated with cardiovascular risk.
    • Lowering homocysteine with supplements has not clearly been shown to prevent heart attacks in most people.
  6. Omega-3 fatty acids (not a vitamin, but commonly grouped with heart supplements)
    • Found in fish oil and fatty fish.
    • Can lower triglycerides and may benefit some people, but effects vary by formulation and dose.

For actually slowing or reducing artery plaque risk, the strongest evidence supports:

  • controlling LDL cholesterol,
  • not smoking,
  • regular exercise,
  • a Mediterranean-style diet,
  • managing blood pressure and diabetes,
  • and using prescribed medications when appropriate (such as statins for eligible people).

If you mean “unclog arteries” because of heart disease, high cholesterol, chest pain, or a scan showing blockage, tell me the person’s age, cholesterol numbers, and diagnosis, and I can give more targeted information.
