You can often control ants effectively without using chemical pesticides by combining a homemade bait with measures that eliminate their food sources and block entry points.
Homemade ant bait
A common non-spray bait uses:
- 1 teaspoon borax
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- A little warm water to make a syrup
Soak a cotton ball in the mixture or place a few drops on a small piece of cardboard near ant trails, out of reach of children and pets. The sugar attracts the ants, and they carry the borax back to the colony. Results may take several days.
Important: Although borax is less toxic than many insecticides, it is still a chemical and should not be ingested or left where children or pets can access it.
Non-toxic ways to keep ants away
- Wipe up food spills and crumbs promptly.
- Store food in sealed containers.
- Empty garbage regularly and keep bins clean.
- Fix dripping faucets and reduce standing water.
- Seal cracks and gaps around doors, windows, and pipes.
- Trim branches or plants that touch your home and provide ant access.
Natural deterrents
Some people use vinegar, lemon juice, cinnamon, peppermint oil, or citrus peels to disrupt ant trails. These may temporarily deter ants but generally do not eliminate the colony, so they work best alongside baiting and sanitation.
If ants keep returning
Persistent infestations may mean the nest is inside walls, under the foundation, or outdoors near the home. Identifying the ant species can help determine the most effective control method.
By combining sanitation, entry-point sealing, and a carefully placed bait, many household ant problems can be resolved without spraying conventional pesticides.
