NEVER use magnesium if you are taking any of the following m…

The warning that you should “never use magnesium” with certain medicines is too broad. Magnesium supplements are safe for many people, but they can interfere with absorption of some medicines or be risky in certain health conditions.

Be cautious and ask a healthcare professional before taking magnesium if you use:

1. Certain antibiotics

Magnesium can bind to some antibiotics and reduce how much medicine your body absorbs, including:

  • Tetracyclines (such as doxycycline)
  • Fluoroquinolones (such as ciprofloxacin or levofloxacin)

2. Thyroid medication

Magnesium may reduce absorption of:

  • Levothyroxine

These are usually taken at different times.

3. Osteoporosis medicines

Magnesium can interfere with absorption of some bone medicines, including:

  • Alendronate

4. Some diuretics (“water pills”)

Certain diuretics can change magnesium levels, so supplements may need monitoring.

5. Kidney disease treatments or reduced kidney function

The kidneys remove excess magnesium. People with impaired kidney function can build up too much magnesium, which can be dangerous.

6. Some heart medicines

Magnesium can affect certain heart-related treatments, especially when blood levels of minerals need close monitoring.

7. Muscle relaxants or sedating medicines

Magnesium may add to relaxing or drowsiness effects in some situations.

8. High-dose magnesium products

Large amounts from supplements, antacids, or laxatives can cause problems such as:

  • Diarrhea and dehydration
  • Low blood pressure
  • Abnormal heart rhythms (in severe cases)

Do not stop prescribed medicines because of magnesium concerns. If you list the exact medications you take (including doses if possible), I can help check whether there are known magnesium timing or safety issues.
