7 Warning Signs in Your Arms and Legs That Could Signal a Heart Attack
A heart attack does not always begin with obvious chest pain. Some people experience symptoms in their arms, shoulders, back, jaw, or even with unusual body sensations. Recognizing warning signs early can help you get emergency care quickly.
1. Pain or Pressure in One or Both Arms
A common warning sign is discomfort that spreads from the chest into:
- The left arm (classically)
- Both arms
- The shoulder area
The feeling may be aching, squeezing, heaviness, or pressure.
2. Unusual Arm Weakness or Heaviness
Some people describe one arm feeling:
- Heavy
- Weak
- Difficult to move normally
This can occur with other symptoms such as chest discomfort or shortness of breath.
3. Tingling or Numbness in the Arm or Hand
Pins-and-needles sensations may occur during a heart attack, especially when combined with:
- Chest pressure
- Sweating
- Nausea
- Breathing difficulty
4. Shoulder or Upper Back Pain
Heart-related discomfort may be felt in areas away from the heart, including:
- Shoulders
- Upper back
- Between the shoulder blades
5. Leg Swelling or Unusual Discomfort (Especially With Heart Problems)
Leg swelling is not usually a classic heart attack symptom, but it can be associated with certain heart conditions, such as heart failure. New swelling, especially with breathlessness, should be evaluated.
6. Cold, Clammy Hands or Feet
During a heart attack, the body’s stress response can cause:
- Cold sweat
- Pale skin
- Cold extremities
7. Sudden Weakness, Dizziness, or Loss of Balance
These symptoms can occur with serious heart problems and should not be ignored, especially if they appear suddenly.
