Oven-Baked Potatoes (Classic Recipe)

Serves: 4
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 50–60 minutes

Ingredients

  • 4 large russet potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1–2 teaspoons coarse kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper (optional)

Optional toppings:

  • Butter
  • Sour cream
  • Shredded cheddar cheese
  • Chopped chives or green onions
  • Crumbled bacon
  • Steamed broccoli

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Wash and scrub the potatoes well, then dry them completely.
  3. Pierce each potato 5–6 times with a fork.
  4. Rub the potatoes with olive oil and sprinkle evenly with salt (and pepper, if using).
  5. Place the potatoes directly on the oven rack or on a baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 50–60 minutes, or until the skins are crisp and a fork easily pierces the center.
  7. Let the potatoes rest for 5 minutes.
  8. Slice each potato lengthwise, fluff the inside with a fork, and add your favorite toppings.

Tips for Perfect Baked Potatoes

  • Russet potatoes produce the fluffiest interior.
  • Don’t wrap potatoes in foil if you want crispy skins.
  • Larger potatoes may need up to 75 minutes to become fully tender.
  • For extra fluffy potatoes, gently squeeze the ends (using an oven mitt) before opening.

Enjoy as a side dish with grilled meats, chili, or a fresh salad, or load them up with toppings for a satisfying meal.
