Magnesium and Blood Pressure/Heart Medications: Which Ones Can Interact?

Magnesium is an important mineral involved in muscle function, nerve activity, and heart rhythm. Many people take magnesium supplements for cramps, sleep, or general health. However, magnesium can interfere with the absorption or effects of certain medications, including some used for blood pressure and heart conditions.

This does not mean everyone taking heart medication must avoid magnesium—but timing, dosage, kidney function, and the specific drug all matter.

Blood Pressure and Heart Medications That May Interact With Magnesium

1. Calcium Channel Blockers

Examples:

  • Amlodipine
  • Nifedipine
  • Verapamil
  • Diltiazem

Possible issue: Magnesium may add to the blood-pressure-lowering effect in some people, increasing the chance of dizziness or low blood pressure.

What to do: Monitor blood pressure and ask your healthcare provider whether timing adjustments are needed.

2. Diuretics (“Water Pills”)

Examples:

  • Furosemide
  • Hydrochlorothiazide

Possible issue: The interaction can go either way:

  • Some diuretics lower magnesium levels.
  • Some magnesium supplements may affect electrolyte balance.

What to do: Your healthcare provider may monitor magnesium, potassium, and kidney function.

3. ACE Inhibitors and ARBs

Examples:

  • Lisinopril
  • Enalapril
  • Losartan
  • Valsartan

Possible issue: The concern is usually not a direct magnesium interaction, but kidney function. If the kidneys do not clear minerals properly, magnesium levels can rise.

4. Beta Blockers

Examples:

  • Metoprolol
  • Atenolol
  • Propranolol

Possible issue: Magnesium does not usually “cancel out” beta blockers, but both can influence heart rate and blood pressure. Some people may notice more dizziness or weakness.

5. Heart Rhythm Medications

Some antiarrhythmics require careful electrolyte balance.

Examples:

  • Amiodarone
  • Sotalol

Possible issue: Changes in magnesium levels can affect heart rhythm, especially in people with existing rhythm problems
