Magnesium and Blood Pressure/Heart Medications: Which Ones Can Interact?
Magnesium is an important mineral involved in muscle function, nerve activity, and heart rhythm. Many people take magnesium supplements for cramps, sleep, or general health. However, magnesium can interfere with the absorption or effects of certain medications, including some used for blood pressure and heart conditions.
This does not mean everyone taking heart medication must avoid magnesium—but timing, dosage, kidney function, and the specific drug all matter.
Blood Pressure and Heart Medications That May Interact With Magnesium
1. Calcium Channel Blockers
Examples:
- Amlodipine
- Nifedipine
- Verapamil
- Diltiazem
Possible issue: Magnesium may add to the blood-pressure-lowering effect in some people, increasing the chance of dizziness or low blood pressure.

2. Diuretics (“Water Pills”)
