Laundry as White as Milk: A Simple Ingredient That Can Help Brighten Clothes

A popular household tip for making white laundry look brighter is using baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). It is a mild alkaline substance that can help loosen dirt, reduce odors, and improve the cleaning action of detergent.

How to use baking soda in laundry

  1. Add about ½ cup of baking soda to the washing machine along with your regular detergent.
  2. Wash clothes using the normal cycle recommended for the fabric.
  3. For stubborn stains, make a paste with baking soda and a little water, apply it to the area, let it sit briefly, then wash.

Other ways to keep white clothes looking bright

✅ Avoid overloading the washing machine—clothes need room to move.
✅ Wash whites separately from darker colors.
✅ Use the correct amount of detergent (too much can leave residue).
✅ Dry clothes properly—some stains can become harder to remove after heat drying.
✅ Treat stains as soon as possible.

Important note

Baking soda can help freshen and brighten many washable fabrics, but it is not a miracle whitening agent and may not remove every type of stain. For some whites, oxygen-based bleach products (used according to the label) may work better.

Always check the clothing care label before trying any cleaning method, especially on delicate fabrics.
