7 Signs of Arthritis You Shouldn’t Ignore

Arthritis refers to a group of conditions—most commonly Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis—that cause inflammation, pain, and stiffness in the joints. The problem is often gradual, so early signs can be easy to dismiss as “normal aging” or fatigue. Here are 7 warning signs you shouldn’t ignore:

1. Persistent joint pain

Pain that lasts for weeks (not just a few days) and keeps returning—especially in knees, hands, hips, or shoulders—can be an early sign.

2. Morning stiffness

If your joints feel stiff for more than 30 minutes after waking up or sitting still, it may point to inflammatory arthritis rather than simple overuse.

3. Swelling around joints

Noticeable puffiness, warmth, or tenderness in a joint often signals inflammation inside the joint space.

4. Reduced range of motion

If bending, gripping, or moving a joint becomes harder than before, cartilage or joint lining may already be affected.

5. Joint tenderness to touch

Pain when pressing lightly on a joint—especially without injury—can indicate ongoing inflammation.

6. Clicking, grinding, or popping sensations

A “grating” feeling during movement (called crepitus) can happen when cartilage is wearing down.

7. Fatigue or low energy

In inflammatory types like rheumatoid arthritis, the immune system activity can cause constant tiredness, even without heavy activity.

When to get checked

If you notice a combination of these symptoms lasting more than a few weeks, it’s worth seeing a healthcare professional early. Early diagnosis can slow progression and protect joint function.

If you want, tell me your symptoms and I can help you understand whether they sound more like wear-and-tear arthritis or inflammatory arthritis.
