FIBROMYALGIA: The Disease of Unexpressed Emotions

The phrase “fibromyalgia: the disease of unexpressed emotions” is a popular claim, but it is not a medically established explanation for fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a real, complex condition involving the way the nervous system processes pain signals. It can involve:

  • Widespread muscle and body pain
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Sleep problems
  • Brain fog (“fibro fog”)
  • Increased sensitivity to touch, temperature, or pressure

Researchers believe fibromyalgia may involve a combination of factors, including genetics, nervous system changes, stress responses, sleep disruption, and other biological processes. Emotional stress, anxiety, or trauma can influence symptoms and flare-ups, but that does not mean emotions are the cause of the disease or that people “created” their illness by not expressing feelings.

A balanced way to describe it would be:

“Fibromyalgia is a condition where the nervous system becomes more sensitive to pain. Stress and emotional health can affect symptoms, but fibromyalgia is a complex medical condition with biological factors as well.”
