What Is the “Ideal” Weight for Your Age and Height?
The idea of one perfect weight for each age is a myth. A healthy weight depends on several factors, including:
- Height
- Age
- Sex
- Muscle mass
- Bone structure
- Overall health
One common screening tool is Body Mass Index (BMI), which compares weight to height.
BMI categories for most adults
| BMI | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5–24.9 | Healthy weight range |
| 25.0–29.9 | Overweight |
| 30.0 or higher | Obesity range |
Example: approximate healthy weight ranges by height
| Height | Approximate healthy weight range |
|---|---|
| 5’0″ (152 cm) | 95–128 lb (43–58 kg) |
| 5’4″ (163 cm) | 110–145 lb (50–66 kg) |
| 5’8″ (173 cm) | 125–164 lb (57–74 kg) |
| 6’0″ (183 cm) | 140–184 lb (64–83 kg) |
(These are general estimates, not a personal medical target.)
Why BMI isn’t the whole picture
BMI does not distinguish between:
- Muscle and fat
- Where body fat is stored
- Fitness level
- Age-related changes in body composition
For example, a muscular person may have a higher BMI but still have excellent health markers.
Other useful measures include:
✅ Waist circumference
✅ Blood pressure
✅ Blood sugar levels
✅ Cholesterol levels
✅ Fitness and strength
✅ How you feel and function day to day
