A sweet, savory, sticky chicken dish that works well with rice, noodles, or vegetables.

Ingredients

  • 1½ lb (700 g) chicken thighs or chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • ⅓ cup honey
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp ketchup (optional, for extra richness)
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar or lemon juice
  • 1 tsp sesame oil (optional)
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water (optional, for thickening)
  • Green onions and sesame seeds, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the chicken
    • Pat chicken dry and season with black pepper and paprika.
    • If using chicken breast, you can lightly coat pieces with a little cornstarch for a crispier texture.
  2. Cook the chicken
    • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Add chicken and cook for 5–7 minutes, turning until golden and cooked through.
    • Remove chicken and set aside.
  3. Make the honey garlic sauce
    • Lower heat and add garlic to the same pan. Cook for about 30 seconds.
    • Add honey, soy sauce, ketchup, vinegar, and sesame oil.
    • Simmer for 2–3 minutes.
  4. Combine
    • Return chicken to the pan.
    • Toss in the sauce and simmer for 3–5 minutes until glossy and coated.
    • Add cornstarch slurry if you want a thicker sauce.
  5. Serve
    • Garnish with green onions and sesame seeds.
    • Serve over steamed rice with vegetables.

Optional variations:

  • Add chili flakes or sriracha for spicy honey garlic chicken.
  • Add ginger for a more Asian-inspired flavor.
  • Bake instead: coat chicken with sauce and bake at 400°F (200°C) for 25–30 minutes until cooked through.
