That’s another clickbait-style teaser. There is no hidden dangerous or miraculous effect of simply drinking water on an empty stomach.

In reality, drinking water first thing in the morning is generally safe and often beneficial.

What actually happens when you drink water on an empty stomach

  • Rehydrates your body
    • You naturally lose water overnight through breathing and sweating
  • Helps wake up digestion
    • Can gently stimulate the digestive system
  • May reduce morning fatigue
    • Mild dehydration can make you feel tired or sluggish
  • Can help with regular bowel movement
    • Especially if combined with a healthy diet

The body function involved is basic hydration of the Digestive System, and water simply supports normal function—it doesn’t “detox” or “damage” anything.


What it does NOT do (despite viral claims)

  • It does not “flush toxins overnight”
  • It does not cause weight loss by itself
  • It does not cure diseases
  • It does not harm your stomach in normal amounts

When to be a little careful

  • Drinking very large amounts quickly can cause discomfort
  • People with certain kidney or heart conditions
