What are the red spots that appear on the skin?

Red spots on the skin can have many different causes, ranging from harmless to conditions that need medical attention. The appearance, size, location, and whether they itch, hurt, or blanch (turn white when pressed) can provide important clues.

Common causes include:

  • Cherry angiomas – Small, bright-red, raised spots caused by clusters of blood vessels. These are usually harmless and become more common with age.
  • Petechiae – Tiny red, purple, or brown pinpoint spots caused by bleeding under the skin. They typically do not fade when pressed and can result from injury, certain infections, medications, or blood disorders.
  • Heat rash – Small red bumps that develop when sweat ducts become blocked.
  • Allergic reactions or contact dermatitis – Red, itchy spots or patches triggered by allergens or irritants.
  • Folliculitis – Inflammation of hair follicles, often appearing as small red bumps, sometimes with pus.
  • Eczema and psoriasis – Chronic skin conditions that can cause red patches or spots.
  • Infections such as chickenpox, measles, or fungal infections can also produce red skin lesions.

Some red spots warrant prompt medical evaluation, especially if they:

  • Appear suddenly and spread rapidly
  • Are accompanied by fever, difficulty breathing, or severe illness
  • Do not blanch when pressed and are appearing in large numbers
  • Are associated with unusual bruising or bleeding

If you can describe the spots (size, whether they itch or hurt, where they are located, how long you’ve had them, and your age), or upload a photo, I can help narrow down the possibilities.
