How to Clean Black Mold from a Refrigerator Gasket in Minutes

Black mold on a refrigerator gasket is common because that rubber seal stays damp, dark, and full of tiny food particles. The good news: you can clean it safely and quickly—but it takes a bit more than “minutes” if you want it to actually stay clean.

Here’s a simple, effective method:

🧼 Fast cleaning method (safe + effective)

1) Turn off and open the fridge

Keep the door open so you can see all folds of the gasket.

2) Make a cleaning solution

Use one of these:

  • Warm water + dish soap (for light mold)
  • OR white vinegar + water (1:1) for stronger mold removal
  • OR baking soda paste for stubborn spots

3) Scrub the gasket folds

Use:

  • An old toothbrush or soft brush
  • Cotton swabs for deep grooves

Focus on:

  • Inner folds
  • Bottom corners (most mold builds up here)

4) Disinfect (important step)

After cleaning, wipe with:

  • White vinegar or
  • diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water)

This kills remaining mold spores.

5) Dry completely

Use a clean dry cloth and leave the fridge door open for 10–15 minutes.

Moisture is what allows mold to come back.

⚠️ Safety tips

  • Don’t mix bleach with vinegar (creates toxic gas)
  • Wear gloves if mold is heavy
  • Avoid harsh scraping that can damage the rubber seal

🧠 How to stop it coming back

  • Wipe gasket weekly with warm soapy water
  • Keep fridge slightly open for a few minutes after cleaning
  • Check for spills or food crumbs near the seal
  • Keep humidity low inside the fridge

🚨 When to replace the gasket

If you see:

  • Deep black staining that won’t clean
  • Cracks or peeling rubber
  • Persistent bad smell

Then cleaning won’t be enough—you may need a replacement seal.
