All you need is a dishwasher tablet! The oven will be like new again

That tip is popular on social media, but it’s generally not a good idea.

Dishwasher tablets contain strong detergents and abrasive ingredients designed for dishwashers, not for scrubbing oven surfaces. Using one to clean an oven can:

  • Scratch the oven door glass or enamel coating.
  • Damage protective finishes inside the oven.
  • Leave behind chemical residue if the oven isn’t rinsed thoroughly.
  • Irrate your skin if you handle the tablet without gloves.

A safer approach is to:

  1. Remove loose food debris.
  2. Use an oven cleaner that’s intended for your oven’s surface (following the manufacturer’s instructions), or a paste of baking soda and water for lighter buildup.
  3. Let it sit, wipe it away, and rinse with a damp cloth.
  4. For stubborn grease, warm (not hot) soapy water and a non-scratch sponge often work well.

If you have a self-cleaning oven, it’s best to use the built-in self-cleaning cycle according to the manufacturer’s instructions instead of chemical cleaners.

So while a dishwasher tablet might appear to work, it can also damage the oven, making it a risky shortcut.
