Amlodipine Side Effect should not Ignore Today?

Amlodipine is a commonly used blood pressure medicine (a calcium channel blocker). Many people take it safely, but some side effects should not be ignored, especially if they appear suddenly or are severe.

Seek urgent medical help today if you have:

  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, trouble breathing, or severe rash (possible allergic reaction)
  • Chest pain, severe pressure, or worsening heart symptoms
  • Fainting, severe dizziness, or feeling like you may pass out
  • Very fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Severe weakness or confusion

Contact your doctor soon if you notice:

  • New or worsening swelling of ankles, feet, or legs (a common amlodipine effect that may need adjustment)
  • Shortness of breath, especially with swelling or rapid weight gain
  • Very low blood pressure symptoms (lightheadedness, unusual tiredness)
  • Persistent or bothersome headaches
  • Unusual tiredness, flushing, or dizziness that does not improve
  • Gum swelling/overgrowth (can occur with longer use)

More common side effects that are often mild:

  • Ankle/foot swelling
  • Flushing or warmth
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Mild palpitations

Do not stop amlodipine suddenly without medical advice, because your blood pressure may rise again.

If you tell me:

  1. your dose (for example 5 mg or 10 mg),
  2. how long you have been taking it, and
  3. the side effect you are experiencing today,
I can help you judge how urgent it may be.
