Bananas Last 10 Days Longer When Stored with One Kitchen Item Instead of in a Fruit Bowl

The claim that bananas can last about 10 days longer when stored with a certain kitchen item is usually referring to plastic wrap or reusable wrap around the banana stems.

Here’s why it may help:

  • Bananas release ethylene gas, a natural plant hormone that speeds up ripening.
  • Much of this gas escapes from the stem area (the banana “crown”).
  • Covering the stems can slow ethylene release, which may delay browning and softening.

Other ways to help bananas last longer:

  • Keep them away from other ripe fruits (especially apples and pears, which also release ethylene).
  • Store them at room temperature until they reach your preferred ripeness.
  • Once ripe, put them in the fridge—the peel may turn dark, but the inside usually stays good longer.
  • Separate individual bananas from the bunch if you want to slow ripening.

The “10 days longer” figure is not guaranteed; the actual difference depends on the banana variety, temperature, and how ripe they were when purchased.
