How to Keep Geraniums Blooming Almost Continuously for Over a Year
Geraniums (pelargoniums) can produce flowers for many months when they receive the right care. While no method can guarantee nonstop blooms in every climate, a consistent routine can encourage long, repeat flowering and keep plants healthy for a year or more.
1. Remove faded flowers regularly (deadheading)
One of the most important steps is removing spent blooms.
- Cut or pinch off the entire flower cluster once it begins to fade.
- Remove yellowing leaves as well.
- This encourages the plant to put energy into producing new flowers instead of seeds.
2. Give geraniums plenty of sunlight
Geraniums love light.
- Aim for 4–6+ hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Insufficient light often causes:
- Fewer flowers
- Long, weak stems
- More leaves and fewer blooms
If growing indoors, place them near a bright sunny window.
3. Avoid overwatering
Geraniums prefer soil that dries slightly between waterings.
