How to Remove Set-In Grease Stains From Laundry
Set-in grease stains can be stubborn because oil bonds tightly with fabric fibers. The good news is that many old grease stains can still be improved with the right treatment.
Method 1: Dish soap + baking soda (great for many fabrics)
You’ll need:
- Liquid dish soap (preferably a grease-cutting type)
- Baking soda
- An old toothbrush or soft brush
Steps:
- Place the stained area on a flat surface.
- Apply a few drops of dish soap directly to the grease stain.
- Sprinkle baking soda over the soap.
- Gently scrub with a soft brush for 1–2 minutes.
- Let it sit for 15–30 minutes.
- Rinse with warm water (if the fabric allows).
- Wash normally.
Method 2: Laundry detergent pre-treatment
- Apply liquid laundry detergent directly to the stain.
- Rub it gently into the fabric.
- Leave it for 10–20 minutes.
- Wash according to the care label.
For older stains, repeating the process may be necessary.
Method 3: Use a grease absorber for fresh or remaining oily spots
For a stain that still feels oily:
- Sprinkle cornstarch, baby powder, or baking soda over the area.
- Leave it for several hours or overnight.
- Brush off the powder.
- Follow with a detergent wash.
Important tips
✅ Do not put the garment in the dryer until the stain is gone.
Heat can permanently set remaining grease into the fibers.
✅ Check the stain after washing.
If you still see it, repeat treatment before drying.
✅ Test first on delicate or colored fabrics.
Strong cleaners can affect dyes.
For delicate fabrics
For silk, wool, leather, or “dry clean only” clothing:
- Avoid aggressive scrubbing.
- Take the item to a professional cleaner or follow the garment care instructions.
With set-in grease stains, patience matters—older stains often need two or three treatment cycles rather than one attempt.
