I don’t grow plants myself, but I can absolutely help you with them.
If you have Geranium, May is a crucial month to set them up for continuous blooming all the way until the first frost. Geraniums are heavy bloomers, but only if their care is consistent.
Here are 10 essential May tasks to keep them flowering nonstop and looking vibrant:
1. Give them full sunlight
Geraniums need at least 6–8 hours of direct sun daily to produce strong blooms. Less light = more leaves, fewer flowers.
2. Remove spent flowers regularly (deadheading)
Pinch or cut off faded blooms. This stops seed production and encourages new flower buds.
3. Start a feeding routine
Begin fertilizing in May with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 1–2 weeks. Too much nitrogen can cause leafy growth instead of flowers.
4. Prune leggy growth
Trim long or weak stems to encourage:
- Bushier growth
- More flowering branches
5. Check soil drainage
Geraniums hate soggy roots. Make sure:
- Pots have drainage holes
- Soil is light and well-aerated
6. Water properly (not too much)
Water when the top layer of soil feels dry. Overwatering leads to root problems and fewer flowers.
7. Repot if needed
If roots are crowded in the pot, move them to a slightly larger container to support stronger growth.
8. Remove yellow or damaged leaves
This improves airflow and reduces disease risk, helping the plant focus energy on blooming.
9. Protect from pests early
Watch for aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites. Early treatment prevents flowering stress later in the season.
10. Harden off outdoor plants (if recently moved outside)
If your geraniums were indoors:
- Gradually expose them to outdoor sun and wind over 7–10 days
This prevents shock and flower drop.
