How to Clean Your Toilet Flush and Make It Look Like New

If by “toilet flush” you mean the flush tank/cistern and flushing mechanism, cleaning it periodically can improve appearance and help prevent mineral buildup.

What you’ll need

  • Rubber gloves
  • White vinegar
  • Soft brush or old toothbrush
  • Microfiber cloth or sponge
  • Mild dish soap

For mineral deposits and grime inside the tank

  1. Turn off the water supply to the toilet.
  2. Flush to empty most of the tank.
  3. Pour enough white vinegar into the tank to cover mineral-stained areas.
  4. Let it sit for 1–3 hours (or overnight for heavy buildup).
  5. Gently scrub with a soft brush.
  6. Turn the water back on and flush several times.

For the flush handle and visible parts

  1. Wipe with warm water and mild dish soap.
  2. Use a toothbrush around crevices.
  3. Dry with a microfiber cloth.

If stains are stubborn

  • A paste of baking soda and water can help with surface staining.
  • For heavy limescale, a dedicated descaling product may be more effective. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Avoid

  • Mixing vinegar with bleach or other cleaning chemicals.
  • Abrasive pads on plastic or chrome parts, which can scratch surfaces.

If the toilet still looks old

Discoloration, worn plastic components, rusted hardware, or damaged seals may not clean up fully and could require replacement parts.
