Constant throat phlegm (that feeling of mucus stuck in your throat) is common, but it’s not something to ignore if it lasts more than a couple of weeks. It’s usually a symptom of an underlying issue, not a disease itself.
Here are the most common causes:
🫁 1. Post-nasal drip (most common)
Mucus from your nose/sinuses drips down the back of your throat.
Triggers:
- Allergies (dust, pollen, smoke)
- Sinus infection
- Cold or flu recovery
Clues:
- Frequent throat clearing
- Worse in the morning or when lying down
🌫️ 2. Allergies or irritants
Your body produces extra mucus to trap irritants.
Common irritants:
- Dust (very common in dry climates like parts of Punjab)
- Air pollution
- Perfumes, smoke
🍽️ 3. Acid reflux (GERD / LPR)
Stomach acid irritates the throat, causing thick mucus sensation.
Clues:
- Sour taste in mouth
- Worse after spicy/oily food or late meals
- Hoarseness or mild sore throat
🌬️ 4. Dry air or dehydration
Low humidity or not drinking enough water can thicken mucus, making it feel “stuck.”
🚬 5. Smoking or exposure to smoke
Smoke irritates airways and increases mucus production.
🦠 6. Chronic infections (less common)
Long-lasting sinus or throat infections can cause persistent phlegm.
⚠️ When to get checked
See a doctor if you have:
- Phlegm lasting more than 3–4 weeks
- Blood in mucus
- Weight loss or persistent fever
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
🧠 Simple things that may help
- Drink more water
- Steam inhalation (especially at night)
- Saline nasal rinse
- Avoid late-night spicy/oily meals
- Reduce dust exposure
