Eight pills that should not be taken because they affect the kidneys

That headline is misleading. There are no “8 pills you should never take” for everyone. What’s true is that some medicines can affect the kidneys if misused, taken in high doses, or used long-term—especially in people with existing kidney disease.

Your kidneys are part of the filtration system, and damage risk depends on dose, duration, hydration, age, and medical conditions, not just the drug name.

Medicines most often linked to kidney stress (when misused)

1. Painkillers (NSAIDs)

Examples: ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen

  • Can reduce blood flow to kidneys if overused
  • Risk increases with dehydration or long-term use

2. Certain antibiotics

  • Some types (like aminoglycosides) can be toxic in high doses
  • Usually only used under medical supervision

3. Diuretics (“water pills”)

  • Used for blood pressure or swelling
  • Can cause dehydration if not monitored

4. Blood pressure drugs (ACE inhibitors / ARBs)

  • Example: lisinopril, losartan
