Eight pills you shouldn’t take because they damage your kidneys

That headline is overly dramatic and not medically accurate as a fixed “8 pills list.” Kidney risk depends on dose, duration, existing kidney health, dehydration, and combinations of drugs—not a universal banned list for everyone.

However, doctors do strongly warn about certain medications that can harm kidneys if misused or taken long-term.


⚠️ Medicines that can damage kidneys (if overused or unsafe use)

1. Painkillers (NSAIDs)

Examples:

  • ibuprofen
  • diclofenac
  • naproxen

✔️ Risk:

  • reduce blood flow to kidneys
  • can worsen kidney disease with long-term use

2. Certain antibiotics

Examples:

  • gentamicin
  • vancomycin (high doses)

✔️ Risk:

  • can be toxic to kidney cells if not monitored

3. Strong acid reflux medicines (PPIs)

Examples:

  • omeprazole
  • esomeprazole

✔️ Risk (long-term use only):

  • may increase risk of chronic kidney disease in some studies

4. Diuretics (water pills)

Examples:

  • furosemide
  • hydrochlorothiazide

5. Contrast dye (for scans)

  • used in CT scans and angiography

✔️ Risk:

  • can stress kidneys in people with existing kidney problems
